AFive-Day RUSA-Sponsored workshop on Yeast Genetics atthe Department ofBiotechnology

6th  to 10th  October, 2025

TheDepartment of Biotechnology, Govt. V.Y.T. PG. Autonomous College, Durg, successfullyorganized a five-day Hands-On Workshopon “Yeast Genetics”,sponsored by RUSA 2.0, from 6th to 10th October, 2025. Under the convenership of Dr. Shweta Pandey and with the support of Prof. A.K. Singh,Patron & Principal, theworkshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from 40 students, 3 faculty members, and 2 research scholars. The technical sessions were led byDr.Shuvadeep Maity from BITS Pilani Hyderabad, along withtechnical experts Dr. K. Pradeep, Mr.K.Chaitanya, and Ms. Vaishali Kumar,who collectively delivered theory,demonstrations, and hands-on practicaltraining throughout the program.

Overthe course of five days, participants learned key molecular techniquesincluding yeast culturing, growth curve analysis, DNA/RNA isolation, competentcell preparation, transformation procedures, and spore dissection. Thehands-on structure of the workshop ensured that students not only observed butalso practiced each experiment with precision and scientific understanding.This training significantly enhanced the participants’ research attitude, technicalconfidence, and laboratory skills—preparing them for advanced academicprojects, internships, and future research opportunities. The Department ofBiotechnology expresses gratitude to RUSA 2.0 for its support and acknowledgesthe dedicated efforts of faculty, experts, and students in making the event aresounding success.

Health Awareness Program –Department of Biotechnology

Date 30/10/2025

TheDepartment of Biotechnology organized a Health Awareness Program on 30 October 2025, focusing on sickle cell anemia screening, blood group testing,and promoting awareness about hemoglobinopathies.

Atotal of 60 community membersparticipated in the camp. The event was conducted by a dedicated team of 10 students, 3 faculty members, and 2 researchscholars, ensuring smooth screening and effective communityinteraction.

Thescreening included blood group determination, sickle cell slide tests, properdocumentation, and counseling on genetic disorders and early diagnosis. Four individuals tested positive forsickle cell anemia and were guided toward further medical consultation.

The initiative strengthened publichealth awareness and showcased the department’s commitment to experiential learning and community service. The Department ofBiotechnology plans to continue such outreach programs to support communitywell-being and collaborative engagement.

One Day Industrial cum educational tour


One Day Industrial cum educationaltour of the Department of Biotechnology was organized for M.Sc. BiotechnologyIst & IIIrd  Semester students, on September 16th, 2025. The tour wasset for DevLeela Biotech and LifeSciences Pvt. Ltd., Near Urja Park, VIP Road,Telibandha, Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

Participants : 26 students  along with 03 faculty members and 02Research Scholar  participated in the tour (Total 31 participants).

Travelling : Travelling for the tour was managed through private bus,through and fro, from college to DevLeela Biotech and LifeSciences Pvt. Ltd.and back to college. We left for DevLeela Biotech at 9:30am morning of 16th September, 2025, and reached there at 11:30am.

Learning and Experiences
Visits to Devleela Biotech. Raipur & Chhattisgarh Tribal Museum, New Raipur

  1. All the participants visited the Plant Tissue Culture production site of the company, where Mr. Anup Karmakar, Production Manager received and escorted our visisting party. Mr. Karmakar showed us all details of their laboratory and tissue cultured plants production site. Students learned the details of lab work, sterilization processes, tissue culture process and all the insights about lab to land transfer procedures.
  2. We also visited their green house and shade house to observe the maintenance and growth of all the tissue cultured [plant products like Banana, Sal, Shesham, Chandan etc. 
  3. Students also came to know about how these tissue cultured plant products are being packaged and dispatched to their destination. They also came to know about the demand and supply chain of the production plant. Mr. Karmakar also presented the students with their latest tissue cultured grown Banana of Israeli variety.
  4. At about 2:30PM, when our onsite visit of Devleela Biotech. Was over, we set off to New Raipur to visit, Chhattisgarh Tribal Museum in order to get and insight of our state tribal heritage.
  5. At the tribal museum, student came to know various cultural, Symbolic, Social and economic aspects of different ethnic tribal population of our state including their traditional medicinal remedies and eco-friendly agricultural practices along with tribal festivals, occasions and their ornamental diversity. It was an eye opening to all the participants to know the huge tribal diversity and their colourful heritage.


Back Journey
After visiting to the state tribal  museum, all the participants hadrefreshments and started return journey at 5:00pm by the bus. Finally wereached college at 7:30pm. Students were handed over to their respectiveguardians and verified escorts before final dispersal.
Tour Expenses: Tour expenses were beard by the college through RUSHA Grant.
